What is Remote Online Notarization (RON)?
Remote Online Notarization (RON) enables notaries to notarize documents electronically from a distance using audio-visual technology. Often referred to as remote notarization, online notarization, or virtual notarization, this process is ideal when in-person notarization isn’t feasible due to travel limitations, mobility challenges, or other restrictions.
RON offers numerous advantages, such as convenience and efficiency.

Is Remote Online Notarization Legal?
In short, yes!
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many states enacted emergency orders to allow for remote online notarizations. In Pennsylvania, RON became permanent with the signing of Act 97 in 2020.
Currently, remote online notarization is legally recognized in 47 states and the District of Columbia.
Which Documents Can Be Notarized Remotely?
Most documents can be notarized remotely, though it’s always wise to check with your attorney or the receiving institution to ensure they’ll accept an electronically notarized document.
Note that the following documents cannot be notarized online:
-
Pennsylvania Vehicle Titles:
PennDOT mandates physical signatures for vehicle title transfers.
-
Form I-9:
The Department of Homeland Security does not permit the completion of Form I-9 via online audio/video conferencing.
-
Certain Estate Documents:
Due to specific signing requirements, some estate-related documents may not be eligible for RON.
-
Tampered Documents:
If a document appears altered or damaged, notaries can decline notarization.
